My educational journey with Coventry University at PSB Academy had a profound impact on my career growth in Artificial Intelligence (AI).
How My Engineering Degree Set Me Up for Success
During the pursuit of my engineering degree at Coventry University, it didn’t feel like I was blindly attending classes, but I was able to immerse myself in a curriculum that thrived on practical learning. The multiple hands-on projects and assignments weren’t just tasks; they were gateways to discovering the intricacies of my field.
PSB Academy stood out for its unwavering dedication to nurturing student progress and development. The lecturers were more than educators; they were proactive mentors, ensuring we never missed out on promising opportunities. And it was within this nurturing environment that a door to a significant opportunity swung open – an opportunity to work with a Scientist from a well-known research agency in Singapore for my final year project.
Building meaningful connections with lecturers like Dr Balamurugan and Mr. Syafiq Shahul was an added privilege. These connections went beyond the classroom, transforming into valuable bonds that would shape my journey. Little did I know that these relationships would prove to be instrumental in my final year project.
Final Year Project: Mini Batch and Incremental Machine Learning
It was an awe-inspiring journey that brought me into the captivating world of AI and computer vision. I found myself immersed in hands-on experiences that fine-tuned my coding, machine learning, deep learning, and image preprocessing skills. This real-world exposure paved the way for my role as a junior artificial intelligence (AI) software developer at a software development company after graduating from Coventry University, and subsequently earned a promotion as a Senior AI Software Engineer.
My final year project involves me creating a computer programme — Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), that would learn to recognise human appearances. The goal was to achieve at least a 75% accuracy. Countless hours were poured into Python coding, and in the end, the result was an astonishing 83% accuracy.
While the result was remarkable, this internship was beyond just numbers. It was a transformational journey that moulded my perspectives. I delved deep into machine learning and computer vision, fields that involve teaching computers to perceive and think. Even after my internship concluded, my curiosity didn’t wane as I continued learning more Python coding.
Mapping My Future Professional Journey
Building upon my current experience, I foresee myself pursuing a Master’s degree in AI, which will empower me to dive deeper into this captivating field and nurture my ever-growing curiosity.
The thrill of crafting innovations propels me to actively seek fresh experiences. To me, engineering signifies continuous exploration rather than contentment with prior accomplishments. Isn’t that how new inventions are created to solve real-world problems?
Committed to exploring and pushing boundaries in my journey, I hope my journey inspires you to relentlessly push boundaries and redefine possibilities.
