Back in my Secondary School days, I was from the Normal Technical stream. I always felt that education was not for me. The fear of failure kept me from pursuing a Bachelor’s degree. When the pandemic struck, the sports industry was severely affected, and I, too, as a freelance kids coach, wasn’t spared. My spouse and my family were my biggest inspiration as they stood by me during this challenging time and encouraged me to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree.
Sport and adventure played a massive part in my teenage years. I have never failed to enjoy and find fulfilment while doing sports and outdoor activities, such as hiking and diving. When I realised that sports engagement is in my blood, I wanted to pursue a career in the sports industry thereon.
Back in 2014, Sports Science was not a mainstream discipline. PSB Academy, alongside International Sports Academy, were the only few institutions that offered the discipline. PSB Academy had a vast network, which consisted of public and private awards. Hence, the choice was very clear for me.
A year after my national service, I enrolled into PSB Academy’s Sports Science Diploma. With this Diploma, it enabled me to progress to a 2-year Sports Science Degree with Edinburgh Napier University. The duration of the course was a major deciding factor for me. After the completion of my Diploma, I managed to score a job in a public sector.
The learning experience in PSB Academy was fruitful because the school has helpful and committed lecturers. To name a few, Mr Edger, Mr Mark, and Ms Mariam are whom I am especially grateful for. From networking and communication skills to critical thinking and decision making, these are some of the valuable skill sets I’ve acquired as a student. Additionally, the sports psychology module has helped me to motivate myself not only in the area of sports but also in life. By applying imagery and self-talk techniques to remind myself of my goals and allow me to apply them to my daily life.
Currently I am a Lead Coach with De Kinder Club, my role includes structuring lesson plans and conducting multisport lessons for the kids. With the sports science knowledge that I have acquired, I could understand the psychological, nutritional, physiological, and motor developmental aspects of a human being, which was beneficial to my career.
I hope to pursue a future career in the healthcare industry, maybe as a sports trauma professional or a specialist in physical education working with youth or youth at risk.
Lastly, to those who hailed from the Normal Technical Stream like me, I want you to believe in yourself, please do not doubt yourself because no one is born to fail in anything, even in pursuing higher education. I hope that my story can also impact you in the right direction of your life.
“You are halfway there when you stop doubting and start believing.”
