Audris Chok Jia Jin

School of Health and Life Sciences

Biomedical science student, Audris, shares about what motivated her to finance her own studies and apply for a PSB Academy Merit Scholarship.

Why did you choose to pursue biomedical science?

Before joining PSB Academy, I was studying business IT in a polytechnic. I started reading medical books and became really interested in science. While searching for ways to upgrade from a diploma to a degree, I found out about PSB Academy’s programmes. To switch to the life sciences discipline, I first took a life sciences diploma before continuing with a biomedical science degree.

Did you face any challenges while studying?

Since my poly days, I decided to pay for my own school fees to help my family and to become more independent. In order to do this, I had to take up a few part-time jobs. I worked at a café, as a personal assistant and was even an adhoc event photographer. So it was definitely challenging to juggle both work and studies.

How has the scholarship empowered you?

I found out about the scholarship when I was about to continue with my degree. It has been a real lifesaver as I’m able to focus less on my part-time job and more on my studies. To manage my busy schedule, I have a planner to keep track of all my tasks and activities.

Besides your studies, what else are you busy with?

I’m a member of dance clubs including the one at PSB Academy. My external dance group also made it into the finals of a competition in 2019 where we went up against international teams. Besides this, I also continue to work part-time on some days to earn extra income.
